ToMar plates is the incorporation between two friends, Tom Redington from Surrey, England and Marvin Gloger from Paderborn, Germany. The name ToMar is derived from both of our names and it was founded in August 2011 with the goal of increasing our collections more efficiently by working together, and to increase trade opportunities for other collectors to help support them in this hobby as well.

Marvin has been collecting license plates since 2009 and is member No. #301 of the German license plate collectors club Autokennzeichen-Sammlerclub Deuschland. His collection currently contains around 500 plates. Even though he’s mostly interested in collecting certain license plates from the countries of the United States, Canada, Mexico and Australia, his final shared goal with Tom is to get at least one license plate from every country of the world. This will of course take a while!

Tom has been collecting license plates since mid-2010, but always been interested in the license plates on cars around him, especially the foreign cars for as long as he can remember. He is member #1012 of Europlate and #1227 of NPCC from Australia.   Tom’s collection is slowly growing covering all corners of the world; his favourite areas of interest currently are the Middle Eastern countries, modern ex-USSR countries and recently Central and Southern America. Although any plate which looks different from the UK style plates he sees everyday on the road are of interest!

Below you can see some photos of Marvin’s famous “plate maps”. he has only created three maps so far, the United States, Canada and Australia. Two additional maps are in progress; these are included as “Work In Progress”. The maps are huge outlines of the countries painted on some walls in Marvin’s apartment.
 

ToMar Plates ist eine Inkorporation zwischen zwei Freunden, Tom Redington aus Surrey, England und Marvin Gloger aus Paderborn, Deutschland. Der Name ToMar setzt sich aus den Anfängen unserer beider Vornamen zusammen. Gegründet wurde ToMar Plates im August 2011, mit dem Ziel ein effizienteres Wachstum unserer Sammlungen zu erzielen sowie unser Tauschangebot an Schildern für andere Sammler zu vergrößern um auch sie in ihrem Hobby unterstützen zu können.

 Marvin sammelt nun schon seit circa zwei Jahren Nummernschilder und ist auch Mitglied #301 im Autokennzeichen-Sammlerclub Deutschland. Seine Sammlung umfasst nun etwa 500 Schilder, hauptsächlich aus den Ländern USA, Kanada, Mexiko, Australien und der Europäischen Union. Aktuell ist er besonders auf der Suche nach mexikanischen Schilder, mit dem Ziel alle 30 Staaten Mexikos zu komplettieren. Außerdem fehlen ihm noch zwei Mitgliedsländer der EU.

Tom sammelt Autokennzeichen seit 2010, war aber schon immer an all den verschiedenen Nummernschildern interessiert  welche man des öfteren im Großraum London sehen kann. Er ist Mitglied #1012 bei Europlate sowie #1227 bei NPCC Australien. Toms Sammlung enthält Schilder aus allen Ecken der Welt; seine Hauptsammelgebiete sind allerdings Arabien sowie alle Länder der ehemaligen UdSSR als auch Schilder aus Zentral- und Südamerika, obwohl ihn mehr oder weniger jedes Schild interessieren würde, was vom britischen Design abweicht.

Nachfolgend nun einige Bilder vom Marvins berühmten Schilderkarten. Diese Schilderkarten sind große Umrisse von Ländern gemalt auf Wänden in seiner Wohnung. Aktuell gibt es drei davon, die Vereinigten Staaten, Kanada und Australien. Zwei weitere sind aber schon in Planung, diese wären Mexiko und die EU.

This is the map of United States of America. Just the “Lower 48” states are displayed Alaska, Hawaii and the territories are excluded. The map is painted on wall in Marvin’s living room. It measures 430 x 190 cm and displays 56 license plates of all 50 States, 1 District, and the 5 territories.
The map was created in April of 2009. Blue color was used to indicate the Great Lakes as well as some minor lakes, dark red color was used to indicate bigger mountain ranges.

Even though every plate issuing jurisdiction of the United States is already present on the map, it is still far from being complete. The goal is have a plate from the current series from each jurisdiction. So, by looking at some older plates from the 90’s, there is still a lot of work needed. Diese Karte stellt die Vereingten Staaten von Amerika dar, allerdings sind nur die so genannten “Lower 48” dargestellt, also die zusammenhängenden Bundesstaaten ohne Alaska, Hawaii und Überseeterritorien. Diese Karte befindet sich in Marvins Wohnzimmer und misst circa 430 x 190 cm. Auf ihr hängen 56 Schilder der 50 Bundesstaaten, 5 Überseeterritorien und der Hauptstadt Washington DC.
Um an die Landesflagge anzulehnen wurden Rot und Blau verwendet. Helles Rot als Hauptfarbe, ein dunkleres Rot für hohe Gebirgszüge und ein helles Blau für größere Binnengewässer.

Obwohl schon alle Staaten auf der Karte in Form eines Schildes vertreten sind, ist Marvins USA Sammlung noch weit davon entfernt, komplett zu sein. Sein Ziel ist es, aus jeder Schilderserie, die es seit 1970 gab, mindestens ein Schild in der Sammlung zu haben. Da gibt es also noch einiges zu tun, daher würde er sich über ein Tauschangebot sehr freuen. HIER gibt es die aktuelle Suchliste zur USA und HIER geht es direkt zur Tauschseite.

This is the map of Canada. It is painted on another wall in Marvin’s living room just next to the US map. It measures 240 x 200 cm and displays 13 license plates of all 10 Provinces and the 3 Territories of Canada.
The map was created in October 2010. Blue color was used to indicate all major lakes of Canada as well as the Great Lakes which are shared with the USA. He used a smaller scale than on the US Map, because Canada wouldn’t fit on the wall otherwise as it is considerably bigger then the United States.

The same goal exists for Canada as well as the US, getting plates from the most recent plate issues. Some other plates need to be replaced with newer ones still. Dies ist die Kanada-Karte. Sie befindet sich an der Wand rechts neben der USA-Karte, ebenfalls in Marvins Wohnzimmer und misst etwa 240 x 200 cm. Auf ihr hängen 13 Schilder der 10 Provinzen und 3 Territorien Kanadas.
Die Farbwahl ist gleiche wie bei der USA-Karte, Rot als Hauptfarbe und Blau für größere Gewässer. Auf das hellere Rot für Gebirge wurde hier allerdings verzichtet, auch wurde ein kleiner Maßstab gewählt um das eigentlich viel größere Kanada an die Wandgröße anzupassen, was zur Folge hat, das Kanada nun kleiner als die USA ist. Zumindest bevölkerungsmäßig würde das ja sogar passen. Ein größerer Maßstab wäre aufgrund der nur wenigen Schilder auf der Karte auch nur störend gewesen.

Ziel für Kanada ist ebenfalls, ein Schild aus jeder ausgegebenen Serie seit 1970 zu bekommen, demnach ist auch die Kanada Sammlung noch lange nicht fertig.

This is the map of the mainland Australia and Tasmania, the overseas territories are excluded. It is painted on a wall in Marvin’s entrance hall, just next to the entry door. It measures 150 x 140 cm and displays 8 license plates of all 6 States and the 2 Territories of Australia.
The map was created in October 2010. This time, the whole map was painted in blue color only, which refers to the main color of the Australian flag. He used a pretty small scale for it, because it wasn’t necessary or possible to make it any bigger.

There are still 3 Territories missing on the Australian map, these are: Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands and the Jervis Bay Territory. But the chance of getting plates from there is pretty low, as all of these Territories have got a very low population. Besides these, the Australian collection could be considered as completed. Hier nun die Australien-Karte ohne Überseeterritorien. Diese Karte befindet sich im Flur von Marvins Wohnung direkt neben der Eingangstür und misst circa 150 x 140 cm. Auf ihr hängen 8 Schilder der 6 Bundesstaaten und 2 Territorien Australiens.
In Anlehnung an die australische Flagge wurde ein dunkles Blau verwendet. Einfarbig aufgrund der nur geringen Größe der Karte, da es nur 8 Schilder sind, wäre ein größerer Maßstab sinnlos gewesen.

Momentan fehlen noch die 4 Überseeterritorien Norfolk Island, Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands und das Jervis Bay Territorium allerdings sind diese Schilder aufgrund der sehr geringen Einwohnerzahl der Territorien nur sehr schwer zu finden. Dank unseres australischen Freundes Matthew ist meine Australien Sammlung schon recht vollständig, es handelt sich nur noch um Kleinigkeiten.

 

This will be the map of Mexico. It is not existing yet but it is already proposed, so it is a Work In Progress. It will be a huge map of Mexico painted on a wall in Marvin’s dining room. The final size is currently unknown. The project is delayed unfortunately as the progress of gaining the missing license plates is very slow, so I don’t expect this to be finished soon.

The Mexico map will display one plate from each of the 31 States plus 1 Federal District. The Mexico collection is far from being completed, out of 32 jurisdictions, there are still 17 missing, these are marked with orange color above.

Dies soll einmal eine Mexiko-Karte werden. In grüner Farbe, passend zur mexikanischen Flagge, soll sie auf eine Wand in Marvins Esszimmer aufgebracht werden. Über die endgültigen Ausmaße der Karte haben wir uns noch keine Gedanken gemacht, zumindest sollte sie groß genug sein um 32 Schilder darauf platzieren zu können. Eigentlich sollte dieses Projekt schon im Frühling abgeschlossen sein, allerdings wächst die Mexiko Sammlung nur sehr langsam, daher macht es noch keinen Sinn die Karte zu erstellen um dann darauf noch viele Löcher zu haben.

Wie schon angedeutet wird die Karte 32 Schilder von allen 31 Staaten und einem Bundesdistrikt fassen müssen. Allerdings fehlen noch 17 Schilder, wir habe sie oben in Orange markiert. Wir würden uns sehr freuen wenn sich jemand finden lässt der zur Beendigung dieses Projekts beiträgt.

This will be a map of the European Union. Creating a map of the EU wasn’t our idea actually, it came from Marvin’s Dad who is a enthusiastic supporter of the “United Europe” movement. We are planning to paint it on the big and empty wall in the garage as the map will have to be pretty huge in size to fit the bigger European format plates on it. The color of the map will be blue just as on the Australian map to match the EU flag color. The plan is to get this done within the forthcoming months.

As said above, the EU map will display one plate from each of the 27 EU member states. The EU collection is close to completion. Two member states are still missing, marked with orange color above.

Hier soll einmal eine Karte der Europäischen Union sein. Diese Idee kam ursprünglich gar nicht von uns sondern von Marvins Vater, der ein großer Vertreter der “Vereinigtes Europa” Bewegung ist. Die Karte soll auf der großen Wand in Marvins Garage angelegt werden, da für die länglichen europäischen Schilder mehr Platz benötigt wird. Die Karte wird, wie soll es auch anders sein, in einem dunkeln Blau ton gestrichen. Das Projekt sollte in den nächsten Wochen in Angriff genommen werden, sodass wir hier demnächst hoffentlich eine Europakarte präsentieren kann.

Die Karte wird 27 Schilder der Mitgliedsstaaten umfassen. Die Europa Sammlung hat im Gegensatz zu Mexiko beachtliche Fortschritte gemacht, sodass wie oben markiert nur noch zwei Länder fehlen. Trotzdem fehlen noch kleine Feinheiten in der Sammlung, daher lohnt der Blick auf die Suchliste vielleicht haben Sie ja das ein oder andere abzugeben.
